Julian Tenison Woods
Father Julian Tenison Woods (1832-1889) was a Catholic priest, who was ordained in Australia in 1857 and served in parishes in South Australia, and missioned in Tasmania, New South Wales and Queensland. He conducted geological surveys in Australia and then went to Malaysia in 1883. On his return to Australia in 1886, he conducted a further survey in the Northern Territory of South Australia.
He is well known for his contribution to Australian geology, palaeontology, and zoology, with his letters, articles and books. His first publication in the Transactions of the Philosophical Institute of Victoria was published in 1857. He continued to write even during his final sickness, dictating when he could no longer write. At his death in 1889 he was still preparing for publication, and his final publication was published posthumously in 1890.
His articles and books were published over a 33-year period from 1857 to 1890. He was awarded a medal by the Royal Society of New South Wales in 1888 for his contribution to natural history.
The items in this collection are just a small sample of his prodigious work, and they highlight his meticulous drawing and accounts of geological formations in Australia.
More of his writings can be found with the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart who hold a unique collection of his correspondence with his friend, William Archer from 1863 to 1889 called The Archer Letters or in the The Biodiversity Heritage Library.
