Julian Tenison Woods
Father Julian Tenison Woods (1832-1889) was a Catholic priest, who was ordained in Australia in 1857 and served in parishes in South Australia and Queensland. In 1873, he conducted his first geological survey in Malaysia, followed by others in Queensland, New South Wales, and the Northern Territory.
He is well known for his contribution to Australian geology, palaeontology, and zoology, with his letters, articles and books. His articles and books were published over an 19 year period from 1864 to 1883. He was awarded a medal by the Royal Society of New South Wales in 1888 for his contribution to natural history.
The items in this collection are just a small sample of his prodigious work, and they highlight is meticulous drawing and accounts of geological formations in Australia.
More of his writings can be found with the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart who hold a unique collection of his correspondence with his friend, William Archer from 1863 to 1889 called The Archer Letters or in the The Biodiversity Heritage Library.
